Concept Explanation
 

Civil Revolt

  • As a result of the political and economic policies of the Company government, various sections of the stricken society such as displaced rulers, zamindars, religious leaders, fakirs, sanyasis, soldiers, peasants and tribes many times resisted and revolted.
  • These revolts (between 1757-1857 AD) can be broadly divided into four parts
  •              (A) Civil Revolts

                 (B) Peasant Movements

                 (C) Tribal Movements and

                 (D) Soldiers Revolts.

    Civil Revolts

  • Within 100 years of Company rule, there were many revolts under the leadership of displaced rulers, landlords, etc. The main reason for these revolts was the economic exploitation of the old landlords, farmers, artisans etc.
  • (i) Sanyasi Rebellion

  • The saints of Bengal were followers of Shankaracharya and were divided into different sects.
  • The rebel monks were followers of the 'Giri' Sect.
  • The process of exploitation that began with the establishment of the British Rule in Bengal had its effect on the old zamindars, farmers, artisans and soldiers.
  • In Bengal at the same time (1769-70 AD), there was a severe famine.
